Healthy body, healthy mind
Fully Equipped Fitness Centre
The benefits of a well-equipped Fitness Centre extend far beyond training in specific sports. A strong physical fitness programme utilising strength training equipment helps our students develop healthy habits that will accompany them throughout life. For too long, physical education classes have focused more on general activities (think rugby, hockey and termly bleep tests) and less on strength training and physical fitness. At Centennial Schools, we educate our students on the benefits of strength, cardio and bodyweight training.
Research shows that a large majority of teenagers, as they age through high school and beyond, stop playing sports. (Think of how many adults play competitive sports to stay in shape…very few!) Our students will understand the importance of fitness and in return will live healthy and active lifestyles.
Access to gyms is widely available and Centennial Schools students will be able to make use of the gym confidently throughout their high school careers.
Physical activity and exercise improves
ACADEMIC OUTCOMES MENTAL HEALTH SOCIAL HEALTH SOCIAL WELLBEING
Physical Exercise
Our gym classes provide students with physical exercise on a consistent basis. This is particularly important for the physical well-being of children who do not engage in physical activities outside of school. The gym classes feature workouts that raise the heart rate, pulse rate and metabolism.
Coordination and Flexibility
The gym lessons provide a variety of activities that increase coordination, such as ball throwing, jumping, boxing, etc. Flexibility comes into play with gymnastic activities such as handstands and body weight training exercises.
Socialisation
The social aspect of our gym classes should not be overlooked. The atmosphere is one in which students can learn important social cues that help them interact with others successfully. Students develop specific social skills such as teamwork, good sportsmanship, and learning and following rules.
Endorphin Production
The physical exertion involved in gym lessons results in endorphin production in the brain. Endorphins are the “feel good” hormones that improve mood and outlook. Students who engage in robust gym classes benefit from the release of endorphins. The physical activity becomes fun. The endorphins’ effects allow students to go to their next classes feeling cheerful, relaxed and ready to focus on learning.
