How Students Learn in the Science Lab
The Science Lab is used across grades for practical lessons, deep-dive investigations and integrated projects that support strong STEM education.
1. Demonstration Lessons
Teachers model key concepts, then guide students as they repeat or extend the experiment.
2. Group Investigations
Students design experiments, collect data and present their results to the class.
3. STEM Projects
Science, Maths and Technology connect through real-world problems and experiments.
4. Assessment Practicals
Formal practical assessments that build exam confidence and lab skills.
What Students Gain in the Science Lab
Our school Science Lab helps students move beyond memorising facts. It gives them the mindset and skills of young scientists and engineers.
1. Scientific Thinking
Forming hypotheses, testing, observing and drawing conclusions.
2. Practical Competence
Learning how to handle equipment safely and accurately.
3. Data Literacy
Recording, analysing and interpreting results.
4. Collaboration & Communication
Working in teams, sharing roles and presenting findings.
5. Curiosity & Confidence
Seeing theory work in real life builds deeper understanding and self-belief.
Science in Our Bigger Learning Model
The Science Lab doesn’t exist in isolation. It works alongside our Learning Hubs, Creative Hubs and eSports & digital spaces to support a rich, real-world STEM education experience.
Students might explore theory in a Learning Hub, run experiments in the Science Lab, then present their findings in a Creative Hub or digital project.
Creative Hubs
Learning Hubs build understanding; Creative Hubs stretch ideas and expression.
Curriculum
Our personalised, tech-integrated CAPS curriculum and IEB Exams with enrichment electives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which grades use the Science Lab?
The Science Lab is used mainly by Intermediate and Senior School students for Natural Sciences, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences practicals.
What kinds of experiments do students do?
Students run age-appropriate experiments in Chemistry, Physics and Biology – from basic observations to more complex investigations that support the CAPS / IEB curriculum.
How is safety managed in the Science Lab?
Students are trained on lab rules, always supervised by a teacher, and must use the correct safety gear (coats, goggles, gloves) for every practical.
Do practicals count towards assessment?
Yes. Practical skills and investigations form part of formal assessment and help prepare students for Senior Phase and Matric requirements.
Is the Science Lab the same as a normal classroom?
No. It’s a dedicated, state-of-the-art space with specialist equipment, prep areas and layouts designed specifically for experiments and STEM projects.
